Watch Out for These Plumbing Issues This Winter

Winter is right around the corner in Westchester County. While the weather is still comparatively mild, now is a good time to get prepared for some of the most common plumbing issues that can arise in the cold season.

Here are a few problems to look out for, along with cautionary steps you can take before calling for a Pelham emergency plumber.

Frozen Pipes

Icy conditions can cause the water inside both indoor and outdoor pipes to freeze and expand. That, in turn, can cause the pipes to develop cracks and burst. This problem is most commonly seen in outside spigots, but it can also happen when indoor pipes are poorly insulated.

Disconnect and drain the hoses and cover exposed spigots to prevent frozen outdoor pipes. For indoor protection, make sure to insulate any pipes in unheated areas. You might also let faucets drip just a little to relieve pressure and keep water flowing.

Clogged Drains

In the winter, drains can get clogged when oil, grease, and dish soap freeze up and solidify. Since you’re more likely to be at home in winter and use your plumbing more frequently, this heavier use — along with the restricted flow — can cause drains to back up and clog.

Clean your drains regularly, and dispose of grease and debris in your garbage rather than pouring them down the drain.

Water Heater Problems

Water heaters are used more in winter. They take a little longer to warm up and can also suffer from the collection of sediment or burst pipes. A broken water heater cuts off your hot water supply at crucial moments and requires the services of a Pelham emergency plumber. Take time to check for leaks and proper insulation of water heater components.

Snowmelt in Basements

When temperatures rise too rapidly after a snowfall, the resultant melt can overwhelm drainage systems and cause water to collect in basements. Keep outside gutters clean and consider using a sump pump to direct water away from your basement.
